About Group Classes

I didn’t get my start in music with private lessons.

I started playing the violin in a group class almost 35 years ago…and yet still went on to get a music degree!

I spent 3 years in group music classes before I ever took a private lesson. All of those classes were “traditional”, meaning I had to learn to read music and play lots of slow exercises before I reached anything that really sounded like a song. And 25 years ago, when I first started teaching, I taught the same way I had learned.

But almost 10 years into teaching music myself, I discovered there were better, faster ways to get the same results for beginners as the old “read first” approach. After all, we study an instrument so we can really play it…so why not start with what we’re really after, first thing?

(I do love music theory, I just save it for later these days!)

 Our group strings program is designed specifically for different age groups to develop the skills to get a good sound and play real songs as quickly as possible.

This group strings program includes:

• Learning how to play the instrument first, with the most important skill right away: how to make it sound good!
• Use of classroom violins during class. No need to have your own instrument right away!
• Personal assistance with finding your first instrument when you’re ready.
• All practice materials included: everything is provided in class, including a practice plan if you don’t yet have an instrument at home.
• Separate Level 1 classes for different age groups, lasting 8 weeks to give you the best start!
• Classes are limited to 10 students so you still get personalized help
• Learn more than just skills: learn multiple (5+) songs in the first 8 weeks of playing!
• The option to join year-round Level 2 classes so you can keep the music going!
• No hidden costs: the 8-week Level 1 class is $120, and the ongoing Level 2 classes are $60/month. I’m a parent, too - and I know how much parents sacrifice to make these opportunities a reality for their kids!
• No pressure to take private lessons: the decision is always yours and this program is designed to keep you playing without having to take private lessons (unless you want to!).
• Classes are held at Portillo Violin Studio: 1927 West Avenue L in Lancaster (shopping center near 20th St. West and Avenue L)
